Situated along the east slope of South Mountain, the village of
South Orange once referred to itself as the “Switzerland
of America.” Settled by Puritan farmers in the mid- 1600’s,
South Orange has evolved into a charming residential village with
a thriving downtown center. Pubs, boutiques and ethnically diverse
restaurants complement the varied collection of architecturally
diverse homes.
South
Orange divides itself into neighborhoods each representing its
own style and era. The Montrose section of town includes many
large vintage and Victorian homes, many on large parcels of land
in a park-like setting. The South Mountain section offers a large
selection of Tudor homes as well as many other diverse styles.
The Newstead section displays mostly postwar colonials, split-levels
and ranches, many with sweeping views of the New York City skyline.
Not to be missed, Tuxedo Park is an enclave onto itself. With
Seton Hall University to the West, this neighborhood with its
strong community association boasts unique older homes on well-planned
streets sheltered by beautifully mature shade trees.
Unique
to South Orange, and adding to its charm, are the nearly 1500
gas lamps that line the streets. Many residents determine the
transition into their sister town of Maplewood by the last gas
lamp on each street. Adding to the aesthetics of the village,
city planners placed utility poles in the backyards, thus keeping
the streets serene and uncluttered.
South
Orange shares a quality school system with Maplewood and faculty
and students are praised for their academic excellence. Student
teacher ratio is 15:1. Columbia High School offers advanced placement
and vocational courses as well as many clubs and varsity sports.

a community center, and a popular sledding hill.
